Best of Health - Our Most Urgent Needs

The Best of Health Fund is a critical resource that helps enhance adult health care in BC. Monies from the Best of Health Fund are directed towards our medical facilities’ most urgently-required equipment and most promising initiatives.

New Mental Health Pavilion at VGH

Mental illness impacts everyone. Whether it be personally or through a family member, friend or colleague, every one of us will be impacted by mental illness or addiction at some point. It affects one in five British Columbians. Unlike many other diseases, it does not discriminate by age, gender, race or socioeconomic status.

MS Care and Research
A current priority for the MS team is an important research study related to the highly publicized procedure intended to improve CCSVI.

Breast Cancer Reconstructive Surgery Program

Each year, 200 BC women with breast cancer undergo a mastectomy. The trauma of this can be eased, in part by breast reconstruction surgery.

Vancouver Prostate Centre

Prostate cancer strikes one in six Canadian men; of those that get it, their chances of dying is also one in six. It is the most common cancer in men.

Cardiac Care

Heart and cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks account for the death of more people in BC than any other disease.

Early Detection and Screening of Ovarian Cancer
The Ovarian Cancer Research (OvCaRe) team at VGH and the BC Cancer Agency formed in late 2000, when a group of Vancouver-based physicians and scientists joined with the common vision of enhancing ovarian cancer research in British Columbia and the explicit goal of improving outcomes for ovarian cancer patients. They are now considered world leaders in ovarian cancer research.

Respiratory Medicine
VGH and UBC Hospital’s Respiratory Medicine Division has, with their multidisciplinary expertise, provided great patient care by delivering the right service to the right patient at the right time.

Adopt a Young Scientist
Clinician-scientists – doctors who split their time between the clinic and the lab – are an important bridge between patient care and medical research. Their dual role gives them a unique perspective.

Eye Care Centre at VGH
Patient treatment and research initiatives pursued at the Eye Care Centre at VGH do more than determine if a patient can see well. Eye examinations and treatment can detect a range of both eye and general health conditions. For instance, through an eye exam, a patient can learn he or she has diabetes.

Leukemia, Myeloma, and Other Blood Diseases and Conditions
Each year in BC approximately 1,000 new cases of blood diseases including leukemia, myeloma are diagnosed in adults. The number is increasing; the incidence of blood diseases is on the rise as a result of society’s aging population and longer lifespans.
