Director of Marketing & Communications

VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation raises funds for medical equipment, research and improvements to patient care at VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Community Health Services across Vancouver.

The Marketing Department positions the Foundation as one of British Columbia's leading philanthropic organizations in order to grow revenue and broaden and enhance the donor base. The Department is responsible for the Foundation's marketing and communications strategy, which supports all revenue streams including Major Gifts and Planned Giving, Annual Giving, Donor Relations and Events, and Lottery programs. The Foundation raises more than $40 million annually in philanthropic revenue for Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Vancouver Community Services. The Department develops and implements integrated marketing communications, including direct marketing, on-line marketing, advertising, public and media relations, consistent with the Foundation's brand, to raise funds and meet organizational goals.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Marketing & Community Giving, the Director is responsible for leading the Foundation's marketing strategies and tactics to drive the revenue and reputational growth of the Foundation. The Director works closely with the Vice President and Foundation management on multiple marketing and communications initiatives to support all Foundation fundraising and marketing programs and donor and stakeholder communications objectives.

Using a broad array of strategies and tactics, the incumbent works to effectively position the Foundation with primary donor target audiences, among key stakeholders and with the general community. The Director has a solid and current understanding of marketing fundamentals and their application within a fundraising environment including: market assessment, research, brand development, product delineation and positioning, message development and donor segmentation and delivery to market.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Delivers marketing strategies to effectively support annual growth plans for each revenue generating program including Major and Planned Giving, Annual Giving, Lotteries and Fundraising Events.

• Directs marketing programs and activities to support Major and Planned Giving in cultivating relationships with significant donors to secure gifts and retain donors.

• Provides marketing and communications advice and support to the Donor Relations team for large signature, donor cultivation and independent community events.

• Supports the Vice President in marketing the Foundation's lotteries aimed at generated ticket sales as well as promoting Foundation cause and brand across the province.

• Ensures that consistent and integrated branding and messaging is delivered through all channels including print, on-line and new media, direct marketing, public relations, collateral including Annual Reports and newsletters with an emphasis on brand development.

• Executes the Foundation's public and media relations plan.

• Seeks out, develops and leverages strong relationships with suppliers and media partners and manages the use of external resources as they pertain to the marketing and communications function (advertising agencies, video producers, printers, etc.).

• Provides overall direction and is responsible for the day-to-day management of all advertising and public relations agencies, designers, and writers for the organization.

• Understand, communicate and leverage marketing data, tools and tactics which produce the highest ROI.

• Closely monitor sales opportunities and competitive landscape to provide management with trends in order to maximize sales and marketing opportunities.

• Proactively identify and develop marketing opportunities to increase visibility and generate donations.

• Develop success metrics for the business; set and manage against needle-moving key performance indicators.

• Oversees the expenditure of a marketing budget.


Qualifications and Experience

• University degree in business or marketing communications

• Eight years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably in a philanthropy/fundraising environment, with a minimum of three years senior experience managing and mentoring marketing staff

• Experience in marketing and communications planning, management and hands on implementation of communications, on-line marketing, social media, advertising, public and media relations

• Strong project management and performance measurement skills

• Experience in mass communication including advertising, direct marketing and graphic design

• Experience generating content for multiple mediums, including product collateral, whitepapers, news releases, website, newsletters, etc.

• Superior business writing and creative copywriting skills

• Strong competency in new media and internet advertising

• Experience with Public Relations and Media Relations (issues management)

• Demonstrated successful experience writing press releases and negotiating with media to proactively secure editorial coverage and public services announcements

• Effective time management, persuasion & negotiation, critical thinking and complex problem solving, and leadership skills

• Strong professional attributes including excellent problem solving skills, flexibility, proactivity, resourcefulness, a passion for continuous learning, and a tactful and collaborative management style.
