Pioneering Research Benefiting People Today
A driving principle of research at our hospitals is the quick
and effective transfer of new knowledge out of the laboratory and
into patient care. Research into islet cells has led to a new
treatment to implant islet cells in diabetic patients, eliminating
the need for insulin. And VGH is home to the “Vancouver
method,” a groundbreaking surgical technique for
minimally invasive hip surgery that means less discomfort and
quicker recovery times for patients while shortening hospital
stays.
Along with biomedical scientists, doctors at the world-renowned
Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute make time in their
careers for research that directly benefits their patients. These
world-class scientists and physicians choose to stay at VGH, UBC
Hospital and GF Strong Rehab Centre because of the unique
collaborative atmosphere within many of the areas of specialty.
Many research initiatives involve active partnerships across our
sites, with their disciplines on site and with institutions across
the country and around the world. They work closely together to
share discoveries – and that provides our patients with
breakthrough treatments, such as new medical procedures using new
ultrasonic surgical devices for precision cutting and controlling
bleeding. Or access to clinical trials of brand-new therapies that
are less toxic and more targeted for people with blood-related
cancers like multiple myeloma and leukemia.
